Vestavia Hills City Schools earns “Accreditation with Distinction,” placing VHCS among top institutions worldwide

Vestavia Hills City Schools (VHCS) has been awarded "Accredited with Distinction" by the Cognia Global Commission, the highest accreditation status a school system can earn.

The designation applies system-wide; all nine VHCS schools achieved the distinction alongside the district itself.

“Accredited with Distinction” is part of a four-tier accreditation status system Cognia introduced beginning with the 2025–2026 school year — the first time in Cognia's more-than-century-long history that it has differentiated levels of accredited performance rather than issuing a single “accredited” designation.

Accreditation status is determined by an institution’s performance on Cognia’s Index of Education Quality (IEQ) and the results of a rigorous, on-site Accreditation Engagement Review conducted by independent, external evaluators. Institutions earning “Accredited with Distinction” must exceed a substantial number of Cognia’s performance standards and demonstrate documented, high levels of student performance across multiple curricular areas.

According to Cognia’s official Accreditation recognition list, Vestavia Hills City Schools is the only public school district in Alabama to earn “Accredited with Distinction” status this cycle, and joins roughly 65 institutions worldwide recognized this year at this level.

“The recognition of Accredited with Distinction is a testament to the exceptional teachers, administrators and staff who serve the students in Vestavia Hills City Schools. It also is an acknowledgement of the unparalleled support we receive from our parents and the community,” Vestavia Hills superintendent Todd Freeman said today.

Cognia’s accreditation carries the recognition and authority of three U.S. regional accrediting agencies: the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC), and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI) — and is recognized nationally and internationally. Cognia serves more than 40,000 public and private institutions in over 100 countries and territories.
